Mixtures of Compounds as Lures for the Japanese Beetle

1970
When 6 compounds in 30 combinations were tested as lures for the Japanese beetle, Popillia japonica Newman, 2 mixtures were as good as or better than the standard, phenethyl butyrate and eugenol (9:1). Geraniol (trans- 3,7-dimethyl-2,6.octadien-l-ol), phenethyl butyrate, phenyl isovalerate, and eugenol (4-allyl-2-methoxyphenol) (9:9:9:3) attracted 1.4 times as many beetles as the standard; geraniol, phenethyl butyrate, and eugenol (9:9:2) attracted 1.9 times as many beetles as the standard. Mixtures containing methyl salicylate did not perform as well as mixtures without it.
