Investigation of absorption of stopped $pi$$sup -$-mesons by nitrogen nuclei with emission of $sup 8$Li

Capture of stopped pi /sup -/-mesons by nitrogen nuclei with emission of /sup 8/Li was studied by means of photoemulsion chambers. Branching of the reaction channels is obtained. Energy, angular and effective mass distributions for combinations of the secondary particles are constructed for the reactions. Theoretical analysis in the framework of the theory of direct nuclear reactions was carried out using shell-model wave functions for the nuclear states. Comparing the theoretical calculations with the experimental data one concludes that a role of mechanisms of the pion capture by a pp-pair and by more complicated nucleon clusters /sup 3/Li, /sup 5/Li, /sup 6/Be is essential for the absorption of stopped pi /sup -/-mesons by nitrogen nuclei.
