Analysis and control of grid quality in computational simulation
1992
A straightforward and effective procedure for the conversion of any CFD flow code that operates on a block-structured grid (or single-block grid) into a multiple adaptive code is presented. The development and application of several grid quality measures for use in static adaptive grid generation are discussed, and a means of analysis and control of grid quality through static and multiple adaptive grid generation is given.
Results of static adaptation to quality measures by the EAGLE grid code shows improvement in some of the grid properties. Results of multiple adaptation by adaptive EAGLE installed in the INS3D incompressible flow code of NASA Ames, and the MISSE Euler code of Mississippi State, show significant improvement in quality of aerodynamics simulation.
A procedure for the incorporation of the adaptive EAGLE grid code into any CFD flow code is presented, along with several examples of adaptive grid runstreams to demonstrate the use of new features.
