O tratamento das deformidades dento-faciais, atualmente, objetiva a obtencao de um resultado estetico e funcional. A deficiencia transversa da maxila (DTM) e uma deformidade originada do pouco desenvolvimento do osso maxilar, e pode aparecer em individuos de qualquer faixa etaria. Pacientes que apresentam DTM podem ser tratados, durante a fase de crescimento, por meio da ortopedia facial e ortodontia. No entanto, apos o crescimento completo da face, e indicado o tratamento cirurgico. A cirurgia so deve ser realizada caso nao haja uma solucao menos invasiva. Por essa razao, os profissionais responsaveis devem estar atentos as complicacoes que podem ocorrer durante a execucao do plano de tratamento. Este trabalho revisa a literatura de forma a esclarecer as complicacoes decorrentes do tratamento cirurgico da deficiencia transversa de osso maxilar. The dentofacial deformity corresponds to the dental and/or skeletal alterations that causefunction alteration or negative facial features capable to disregard an individual from the society. These days, the dentofacial deformity treatment aims at an aesthetic and functional result. The maxillary transverse defi ciency is a deformity originated by the non-growing or small developmentof the maxillary bone and can be a characteristic of the people of any age. Patients who present maxillary transverse defi ciency can be treated during their growing process through the facial orthopedics and orthodontic treatment. However, after the individual's complete growth, surgicaltreatment is recommended. The surgery must only be performed when there is no alternative to choose a less invasive procedure and the professionals that will certainly arise during the executionof the treatment. This paper reviews the literature as a means to clarify the complications that may arise at the pre, trans and post-operative stages on the surgical treatment of the maxilla bonetransverse defi ciency.
