Overview Oral Hygiene And Gingivitis On Male Employee Smoker Bandung Islamic University School of Medicine

The number of smokers in Indonesia continues to increase every year. Cigarettes contain addictive and harmful substances.Oral cavity tissues are the first organ that contact with cigarette smoke. Cigarette smoke can lead to increased plaque and calculus which is can affect oral hygiene, and also affecting gingiva can lead to gingivitis. This study aim to figure out oral hygiene and gingivitis status in staffs of Faculty of Medicine Unisba. This research method was descriptive with cross sectional design. Samples obtained using total sampling with total number of respondents who including inclusion criteria and not included exclusion criteria was 29 persons. Data obtained from questionnaire and oral hygiene index examination also gingiva index examination by a dentist. The result showed that 18 people is light smoker with 10 people owned good oral hygiene status and the rest owned fair oral hygiene status. Meanwhile gingiva status showed mild gingivitis in 15 people and the rest is normal. As much as 8 people was fair smokers with 6 people owned fair oral hygiene and the rest was good. Fair smokers gingiva’s showed mild gingivitis. As much as 3 people was heavy smoker with 2 people owned good oral hygiene and the rest was good and gingiva status showed mild gingivitis. Oral hygiene was pretty good in smokers occurs because of the behavior of maintaining good oral hygiene. Smoking can lead to accumulation of plaque that causes gingivitis.
