Indicators of Social Progress: Tools for Knowledge and Action

2015
This article gives an overview of the contributions to the Conference on indicators of social progress that was organized by the IWEPS and the FPB in December 2014 and of the main lessons learnt from it. Pioneering political decisions made in this field by the Walloon and Federal governments are implemented within the framework of the current ongoing international projects related to indicators. The article shows the diversity and richness of the regional, national and international dynamics feeding the debate on the best ways to measure social progress as well as the convergence efforts under way. In particular, all these indications make it possible to understand the decision-making, development and usage processes involved in the design of indicators complementary to GDP and of sustainable development indicators.
