The invention provides an application of microRNA44a or an encoding gene thereof to regulation and control of the paddy rice stem length; and the nucleotide sequence of the microRNA44a is a sequence 3 or a sequence 4 or a sequence 2 in a sequence table. As proved by an experiment, an overexpression strain of OsmicroRAN444a is obtained by introducing an encoding gene of microRNA44a into paddy rice; and compared with paddy rice into which the gene is not introduced, the plant shows a remarkable phenotype of reduction in the stem height, which indicates that the microRNA44a is closely related to the paddy rice stem height.
