POST-TENSIONING A STEEL BRIDGE: STRENGTHENING OF THE BURLINGTON BAY SKYWAY

1990
The Ontario Ministry of Transportation's first experience with the concept of prestressed structural steel was represented by the rehabilitation program carried out for the original Burlington Bay Skyway. The strengthening of some of the structure's floorbeams was a required part of the rehabilitation process in order to meet current Ontario Highway Bridge Design Code (OHBDC) requirements. The novel technique of applying external prestress to the floorbeams to relieve the overstressing of members caused by member deterioration and increased design loads is described.
