George McCauley: Neo-Byzantine Redneck

2007
George McCauley is an American ceramist who for many of his pieces mines his aesthetic religious tradition, the Greek Orthodox Church, and celebrates the divine within the earthly. The one-dimensional religious figures that characterise Byzantine art are usually flat and stiff and McCauley turns the style inside out with his offbeat, three-dimensional figures of clay that exude animation and sensuality. The dramatic vivid colours and playful tone reflect his Greek heritage.
