Theory Guided Design of Electrocatalysts for the H2-Br2 Flow Battery System

Using high-throughput experimental methods, mixed transition metal sulfides were prepared and several active catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction identified. Traditional electrochemical testing validated the accuracy of the high-throughput screening studies. Ruthenium sulfide doped with cobalt was shown to have high activity compared to platinum which increased as the cobalt concentration was increased, up to a maximum where phase separation was observed and the activity shown to decrease (below).
