Substance Use Among Young People Experiencing Homelessness: A Brief Motivational Enhancement Approach

Young people characterised as homeless, unstably housed, runaway and street youth present with significantly higher prevalence of substance use and mental health disorders. Primary and allied health workers, physicians, nurses, counsellors and youth workers hold trusted and unique positions and can assist in addressing substance use and related difficulties. The use of brief motivational enhancement interventions in primary health, clinic and youth-work settings can assist these young people towards regaining control of their lives.
