Setting up and maintaining a waste management protocol makes the Mdiq provincial hospital center an environmental company

2019
Abstract Hospital waste is classified as hazardous to human health and the environment. In this work, we studied and evaluated, for three years (2012-2015), the installation of a medical and pharmacological waste (MPW) management protocol in the Mohammed VI Provincial Hospital Center in the city of Mdiq-Fnideq in Morocco. From 2012 to 2013, the hospital had no idea where to install the waste management program, but after the installation of this protocol, the amount of waste has decreased by 189 kg/year. After one year (2014), the maintenance of the protocol stabilized the production of waste with a slight increase caused by the increase in medical activities. In 2015, the protocol was unenforced and unsupported, which led to an explosion in MPW production in the hospital to 1226 kg/ year. Hence, there is a need to maintain the MPW levels permanently. Therefore, this study clearly shows that the installation of a waste management plan in this hospital is a realistic solution to lead the hospital to be an environmentally friendly company and that reduces the waste management costs and increases its quality of service.
