Microcavity exciton polaritons

Abstract An exciton polariton has become a model solid-state system of interacting Bosons. A variety of macroscopic quantum phenomena and many-body effects have been observed. As a semiconductor system with an optical interface, an exciton polariton provides a platform for developing photonic devices based on these quantum phenomena. To explore polaritonic device concepts and new quantum phenomena, different methods have been developed to control polaritons via both their excitonic and photonic component, taking advantage of the matter–light hybrid nature of polaritons and mature semiconductor nanofabrication technology. A number of emerging polariton systems based on new materials open up further opportunities of novel phenomena and practical polariton devices.
