Nursing care of acute mucosa reaction caused by intensity-modulated radiotherapy(IMRT) in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC)

2012
Objective To explore an integrated nursing care method in order to reduce the acute oropharyngeal mucosa reaction which caused by intensity modulated radiotherapy(IMRT) in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC). Methods The clinical characteristic of 295 patients of NPC accepted IMRT for the first time were reviewed retrospectively. All patients were given inregrated nursing care around the radiotherapy.Oropharyngeal mucosa reactions in different periods around radiotherapy were observed. Results With the integrated nursing measures, all the patients achieved the anticipated radiotherapy,in spite of acute oropharyngeal mucosa reaction. Conclusions Integrated nursing care for NPC patients with IMRT can reduce the acute oropharyngeal mucosa reaction and improve the tolerability for radiotherapy.
