Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the studies on side effects of intravenous and parenteral infusions drugs. Plasma substitutes such as dextrans and its side effects such as allergic reactions, polygeline (haemaccel) and its side effects like systemic reaction, and hydroxyethyl starch (hetastarch) and its moderate effects on the hemostatic coagulation profile have been described in this chapter. Total parenteral nutrition and its effects like acute respiratory distress syndrome, particularly when accompanied by septicemia, develop an increased mean pulmonary arterialpressure associated with impaired pulmonary gas exchange have been discussed. Micronutrient deficiency, urinary oxalate excretion, hepatobiliary disorders and bone loss have also been described. There is some discussion about the effects of sodium chloride solutions, glucose substitutes, and dialysis fluid.
