Safety Pacemaker Lead Extraction Method Using Forceps (Fujiwara’s Method)

Extraction of permanent pacemaker leads and replacement are required as the number of pacemeker implants increases as well as the incidence of lead infections and dysfunctions. Some transvenous methods for lead extraction are reported, yet demanding advanced technique for the procedures and costly equipments. We report the results of a simple and safety, and inexpensive approach that was evaluated as effective. We operated 40 patients using the forceps method during 1999 to 2010. 35 ventricular leads and 17 atrial leads were successfully removed without major complications.
