Effects of Molasses and Agro-byproducts Compound Supplement on the Quality of Alfalfa Silage

2007
The objective of this study was to find out the effects of adding different agro-byproducts,such as molasses, straw, wheat bran and rice bran on the fermentation quality of alfalfa silage. Results from the experiments showed that the silage which was added with molasses, was well-preserved,the sense quality, the content of crude protein and lactic acid were significantly improved,at the same time, the ratio of ammonia-nitrogen to total nitrogen and pH were reduced;the groups which were added with molasses were most significantly different compared with the control group(P0.01);The content of volatility fatty acid also declined, but there was no difference during the three groups(P0.05);There was most significant difference in the average lactic acid content and the average pH between the two groups with adding molasses(P0.01),while the other results had no significant effects;but in the same molasses levels, the results of the lactic acid content and the pH by adding straw were better than the wheat bran and rice bran(P0.01);there was no difference when not adding molasses, however the moisture content was the key, that is to say,the more the proportion of the agro-byproducts,the better the silage quality.
