Rhino-orbital-cerebral Mucormycosis: A Case Report

1999
We present the computed tomographic findings of rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis in a 50-year-old man with diabetes mellitus. Computed tomography demonstrated soft tissue densities in the left nasal cavity, maxillary and ethmoid sinuses and destruction of the antral wall with soft tissue densities in the pterygopalatine fossa and retromaxillary fissure. Thickening and abnormal enhancement of the orbital globe and rectus muscle, and bulging of the cavernous sinus were also seen. Recognition of these unique patterns of this high mortality sinocerebral fungal infection in patients with diabetes or immusuppression is a key to early diagnosis and successful treatment.
