Ophthalmic inflammation on positron emission tomography in vision‐threatening giant cell arteritis

The patient, a 77-year-old male with two weeks of bitemporal headache, lethargy and dyspnoea was admitted with findings of large pulmonary emboli. During the admission he developed pyrexia, scalp tenderness, jaw claudication, and elevated inflammatory markers. He reported a 10-minute episode of sequential bilateral complete vision loss with full recovery. Investigations for suspected transient ischaemic attack including magnetic resonance imaging of the brain and orbits were normal.
