Medical Image Compression: A Leap on Recent Progress and Publications

2021
Information management is crucial to the success of the modern health care system. The increased volume of image data generated by the modern diagnostic imaging modalities demands more storage space and bandwidth. It is mandatory that hospitals have to store the patient’s medical record for further references. The traditional text-oriented patient information system is being replaced by cloud-based patient medical record. Cloud-based healthcare system relies much on the digital data for keeping track of patient’s health status. In the telemedicine sector, we need to transmit this information over networks in a reliable and cost-effective way. The medical images have the disadvantage of the requirement of larger memory in the database. To overcome the deal with the storage, transmission and high-quality reconstruction problems of medical images, extensive compression techniques are required. This paper presents the concepts of image compression and an extensive survey on image compression techniques for the telemedicine sector.
