Dielectric characteristics of an anodized aluminum strip

2016
The purpose of this work is to study the possibility to integrate aluminum strip in motor coils with only alumina, growth by anodization, as inter-turn insulation. This would allow making more lightweight and possibly high temperature running motors, as aluminum melting point is around 660 °C and alumina remains solid until 2072 °C. Partial discharge inception and extinction voltages and breakdown voltage are quantified under ambient conditions and then under increasing temperatures up to 600 °C. Different technologies are presented prior to the results to justify the choice of anodized aluminum strip. Dissipation factor of the insulation is also studied and shows the resistive behavior of the insulation above 400 °C.
