Technology-Enhanced Learning in Kenya Universities: Influences on Wider Adoption and Take Up
2016
Kenya has seen a steady increase in the number of students wishing to acquire higher (tertiary, or university) level educational qualifications. This is a result of an increased number of students completing free education, paying for tertiary education, and socio-economic development in Kenya [1]. University student enrollment in Kenya increased by 35% between 2012 (240 551) and 2013 (324 560) [2]. The government of Kenya expanded the number of universities in 2013 as one mechanism to address growing demand [3] and has been planning an Open University in Kenya since 2010 [1]. However, it is still very challenging for higher education institutions (HEIs) to deal with the increasing number of students, based on available physical infrastructure and, critically, the number of available qualified university level lecturers [1].
