In 1981 I enrolled in first-year Australian history at the University of Western Australia. To familiarise us with the concept of historical debate, one of the first tutorials was focused on the foundational question of national history - why did the British colonise Australia? During the previous decade the conventional thesis that London was focused only on finding a new place to dump convicts had become the subject of fruitful scrutiny.
