Clothing and other articles from a late 17th century grave at Gunnister, Shetland
1951
Describes in detail the weave and cloth various 17c articles of clothing. Other objects discussed include coins, the deposit on which was analysed by A. A. Woodham. Microscopic examination showed that the fibres of the material of the purse penetrated the deposit proving it was formed while coins were in contact with the purse. Chemical analysis showed the two silver coins to contain copper and the third coin to be practically pure copper. Trace of silver was present in the deposit on the copper, and copper had been deposited on the silver by electrolytic action resulting from the acid of the peat bog. Trans migration of copper from the two silver coins probably also occurred. Action continued till a protective coat of copper oxide was formed. Immersion of the coins in a medium having the same acidity as peat produced a current of several micro-amps. Nine illustrations. -- AATA
