Investigation of a semi-active tuned vibration absorber to mitigate floor vibrations

2000
A semi-active tuned vibration absorber is being developed to mitigate unwanted floor vibrations. Tuned vibration absorbers are a valuable tool used to suppress many types of unwanted vibrations but have had limited success when used on building floor vibrations. Very little research has been found in the current literature on semi-active tuned vibration absorbers used to mitigate unwanted floor vibrations. The state of the art is extended in this work by utilizing a magnetorheological damper based semi-active tuned vibration absorber to attempt to quell unwanted vibrations in an open web composite joist floor system. Analytical results of floors with and without the semi-active tuned vibration absorbers are compared and contrasted. The semi-active system is compared to a perfectly tuned vibration absorber. Since it is difficult to construct and implement a perfectly tuned vibration absorber the analytical simulation examines mistuning of the tuned vibration absorber and the semi-active tuned vibration absorber. The experimental validation is ongoing.
