The invention relates to a method and apparatus for the identification of tin and firing side of float glass, in particular during an automated manufacturing process, wherein a tin and firing side distinctive, in particular optical, properties of the float glass by measurement from the direction of one of the two sides or on one of the two sides is detected and a resulting measured value is compared with a predetermined comparison value, being determined from the result of the comparison, the tin and firing side of float glass.
