Depth sounding systems

2001
Sonar ( so und n avigation a nd r anging) is the acronym identifying those systems that rely for their operation on the transmission and reception of acoustic energy in water. The term is widely used to identify all modern systems that propagate acoustic or electromagnetic energy into seawater to determine a vessel's speed or the depth of water under the keel. This book is not concerned with those specialized sonar techniques that are used for locating submerged objects, either fish or submarines. A navigator in the Merchant Navy is interested only in the depth of the water beneath the vessel, an indication of the speed of his ship and the distance run. See Chapter 3 for a description of speed logging equipment.
