Oxidation of a stressed uranium-graphite fuel element

2013
The three-dimensional problem of stress distribution in a cylindrical fuel element consisting of a graphite matrix and embedded spherical fuel microparticles has been solved by the finite-element method. It has been discovered that the fuel element oxidation rate and the through defectiveness of the fuel microparticle shells are higher in the maximum stress zones. The calculated data have been confirmed experimentally.
