The Application of Photoacoustic Technology in Detection and Noninvasive Diagnostics of Cancer

2010
Objective:To explore the theory, predominance and clinical cancer applications of photoacoustic technology. Methods:According to the process of tumor growth and metastasis, the application of photoacoustic technology in detection and non-invasive diagnostics of cancers was illustrated. Results:None of the commercially available imaging modalities can penetrate beyond one transport mean free path into scattering biological tissue-tumor.Conclusion:Photoacoustic technology(PAT) is a new noninvasive imaging modality under preclinical development that has been applied to several biomedical applications for obtaining anatomic and functional information. The photoacoustic technology is potentially useful for understanding tumor growth and metastasis, diagnosing cancers and evaluating the efficacy of therapies.
