A Low-Profile Broadband Polarization Conversion Antenna Using Metasurface

2020
This paper proposes a novel low-profile broadband polarization conversion microstrip slot antenna using metasurface (MS) for satellite communication. The metasurface contains 4 unit cells, which are arranged in a 2 × 2 layout. Linearly polarized waves can be converted into circularly polarized waves by loading the MS. The circular polarization mechanism of the MS was explained using equivalent circuit and phase analysis. The proposed antenna with an overall size of 0.65 λ 0 × 0.65λ 0 × 0.06λ 0 was fabricated. As a result, the measured 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW) and 10 dB impedance bandwidth achieved to 17.77% and 39.25%, respectively.
