Geographic Information System, Based On Free Software, In Aid Of The Public Administration

The purpose of this paper is discussing about Geospatial Information Systems and their effectiveness to the Public Service, by presenting a study case applied to public emergency services in the city of Belem, Brazil. It is also presented a proposal of a free architecture based on the GIS’s study case. The use of Geospatial Technology, based on Free Software, has revealed to be an interesting alternative to implement GIS projects. It is also an important aspect when developing solutions to the Public Administration, which has usually invested in expensive proprietary solutions, also becoming dependent on companies that provide these solutions and thus having a lot of expense with acquisition and maintenance of Geospatial Technologies.
