The author examines rural-urban migration in Latin America from a historical perspective considering its basis in the population movements of the past century. The focus is on the relationship between migration and changes in the agricultural social structure. Migratory flows are characterized according to class composition the degree and form of control exercised by various social factors and the social political and economic features of areas of origin and destination. The nature of temporary migration and its effects on agricultural production during the last century are studied
