Time Synchronization Principle and Testing Technology in Smart Substations

Abstract A uniform time system for different intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) has a great significance for power system operation, monitoring, control, and fault analysis in smart substations. In this chapter, different kinds of clock sources and common time synchronization principles are introduced, and IEEE 1588 precision time protocol (PTP), including time synchronization method considering transmission delay or not, is described in detail. Furthermore, IEEE 1588 synchronization application in circuit breaker management (CBM) IED and sampling value synchronization technology are illustrated with actual project cases. Finally, synchronization test technology used in different applications is discussed.
