New Ultra-High Speed Photographing System with Giant-Pulse Ruby Laser

1977
This report deals with the new ultra-high speed photographing system developed and its application to direct observation Of grinding phenomena. Output power of the light pulse is about 108 W and pulse width less 5 ns. To observe the phenomena in three dimensions, photographs magnified are taken from two directions. Several interesting phenomena have been found concerning with chip formation, growing and removal process. It is seen that chip eliminating process depends closely upon the microscopic features of cutting edges of grains. The growing directions of chips are not always same when a grain of rather large rake angle in negative is used. At high speed cutting, possibility has been ascertained that a grain of rake angle of -88 produces tear type chips.
