Neurological Outcome in Full‐Term Infants with Intraventricular Hemorrhage

1987
Eight survivors among 12 full-term infants with intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) were investigated for neurological handicap. Five patients developed epilepsy during the follow-up period of 4.5 years (range 2.0—6.8 years); four patients had an electroencephalogram (EEG) showing unilateral paroxysmal spikes, mainly in the central region, suggesting ventricular dilatation. The seizures were either partial, evolving to generalized seizures, or were generalized tonic-clonic seizures. Patients with either moderate ventricular dilation and/or grade III IVH with severe asphyxia had a poor developmental and neurological outcome.
