A Novel Approach in GNSS Positioning Error Interpretationfor Inteligent Transport Sysstems

2015
Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) generally rely upon the accurate position determination of mobile objects. A wide-spread utilisation of satellite navigation systems and techniques allows for convenient, accurate and continuous position estimation for ITS. Still, the inherent drawbacks and vulnerabilities of GNSS- based position determination should be taken into account in order to provide trusted ITS Quality of Service. As the result of continuously changing environment for GNSS positioning for a vehicle on the move, an ITS QoS modeller encounters a significant variability of GNSS positioning errors, which is usually left unaccounted for. Here we propose a novel approach in interpretation of GNSS positioning error estimates, taken during the GNSS position estimation process, with the aim to assist the foundation of the ITS QoS. The focus on analysis and treatment of GNSS positioning error series does not only provide an invaluable insight into GNSS positioning conditions, but also opens the room for GNSS positioning process improvement, and an assessment of the impact of the GNSS positioning performance deterioration on the ITS Quality of Service.
