PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve cycle life of a negative electrode material made of silicon, silicon alloy or the like. SOLUTION: At least one core selected from silicon, silicon containing a transition metal, or silicon oxide is formed from a titanium compound or silicon oxide formed on a particle surface from a solution containing peroxotitanium. A negative electrode material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, comprising a surface layer made of at least one selected from selected oxides, and inserting and extracting lithium during charge and discharge.
