PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide activated carbon which shows a big electrostatic capacity and a low internal resistance per volume, in an electrode material for an electric double-layer capacitor. SOLUTION: The activated carbon, obtained by activating a pitch series carbonaceous material employing an alkaline metal hydroxide, is specified so as to have the total amount of surface functional group of 0.80-1.50meq per gram of activated carbon and a specific surface area of 300-1,500m 2 /g. The alkaline metal hydroxide is preferable to be sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. The active carbon is suitable for the material of an electrode for electric double-layer capacitor.
