Detection of loss of coolant and remedial measures in a battery stack with liquid cooling

A motor vehicle battery module having one or more battery cells and a Kuhlmittelverlustdetektions- and remedial system that works together with the refrigerant, which is configured to provide a thermal management of the battery module. It can be detected in or near the battery module around coolant levels, the cooperation with a controller allows a corrective action in the event that a refrigerant leak is detected. The controller reads from a coolant level sensor which is disposed in a coolant storage container to determine whether the coolant level drops below a predetermined level. If it is determined that the coolant level is low, the controller reports the low level state, and takes a countermeasure. The controller also features a set of activation conditions that must be met before the controller reads the coolant level sensor.
