Modeling and Simulation of Flapping Wings Entomopter in Martian Atmosphere

2013
This chapter presents modeling and simulation of a flapping wing Micromechanical Flying Insect (MFI) called Entomopter. This device is designed for sustained and autonomous flight in Martian atmosphere. The overall geometry of this micromechanical flying insect is based on hummingbirds and large insects. This chapter presents also a method for investigating the unsteady aerodynamics of flapping wings for micromechanical flying insect application. The experimental results show a good correlation with previously published data and the aerodynamic model compares favorably with the experimental results. The simulation results reveal important information regarding dynamics of the system, that could be used in future development work.
