BMW all alloy V-12 engine

1989
The 60 degree V-12 engine configuration has all its rotating masses in equilibrium, and due to the small interval between firing impulses provides a very smooth delivery of torque. The five litre V-12 was the natural choice for the new BMW flagship, the BMW 750 iL. The engine forms a light weight compact unit and is unique in that each bank of cylinders is operated as an independent six cylinder engine. This is made possible by the sophisticated electronic engine management system developed for this engine. The engine and the engine management system are described (A).
