The expression of vascular endothelial growth factor and latent membrane protein-1 and prognosis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma

2007
Objective: To assess expression of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) and latent membrane protein-1(LMP-1) and prognosis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC).Methods:The expression of VEGF and LMP-1 were examined in 50 NPC section by immunohistochemical method.Spearman's Rank Correlation test was used to analysis the relation that VEGF,LMP-1 and lymph node change,as well as LMP-1 and VEGF interrelation. The Cox' proportional hazard model was adopted to analyze the various factors leading to the bad prognosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma patient and screen out the independent prognosis factor having notable meaning to the prognosis.Kaplan-Meier method was used to carry out survival analysis. Results:The positive expression rate of VEGF and LMP-1 were 58 %and 50 %,correlated with lymph node metastasis of neck(P0.05).The expression of VEGF showed a significant positive correction with the expression of LMP-1(r=0.717,P 0.001).The risk factor predicting unfavorable prognosis in NPC was the positive expression of VEGF and LMP-1(P 0.05).Conclusion:The positive expression of VEGF and LMP-1 highly correlated with lymph node metastasis of neck. The induction of VEGF by LMP-1 contributes to the metastatic potential of NPC.VEGF and LMP-1 can be used as predictor of prognosis, which can direct to formulate individuation treatment plan for improving survival rate of NPC.
