Further Field Tests of Chemicals for Control of the European Corn Borer

In field screening tests made during 1968 and 1969 to evaluate control of Ostrinia nubilalis (Hubner), the following chemicals were as effective or more effective than DDT used at a rate of 1.00 lb/acre (pounds per acre in parentheses): diazinon (1.00); Stauffer R-15022 ( O -ethyl ethylphosphonothioate. O -ester with p -hydroxybenzaldehyde O -[ ( O -chlorophenyl) carbamoyl]oxime) (0.25 and 0.50) ; monocrotophos (0.50 and 0.75) ; dichrotophos (0.50 and 0.75) : Pennwalt TD-5032 (hexamethylditin) (0.50 and 0.75); phorate (1.00); Bay 68138 (ethyl 4-(methylthio)- m -tolyl isopropylphosphoramidate) (1.00 and 1.50) ; Chevron 5305 ( m-sec- butylphenyl methylcarbamate) (0.75); Chevron 9006 ( O,S -dimethyl phosphoramidothioate) (0.50 and 1.00) ; a mixture of Chevron 9006 + Chevron 5305 (0.75 + 0.75); carbaryl (1.50); EPN ( O -ethyl O -( p -nitrophenyl) phenylphosphonothioate) (0.25). Velsicol VSC-506 (0-(4-bromo-2,5-dichlorophenyl)0-methyl phenylphosphonothioate) (0.75 and 1.50); TDE (1.00 and 1.50); Perthane® (1.I-dichloro-2,2-bis(p-ethylphenyl)ethane) (1.00 and 1.50); Bay 75546 (0-(3-bromo-.5,7-dimcthylpyrazolyl [1,5-a]pyrimidin-2-yl) O,O -diethyl phosphorothioate) (0.50 and 1.00); Bay 79845 ( O -(3-chloro-5,7-dimcthylpyrazolo [1,5-a]pyrimidin-2-yl) O,O -diethyl phosphorothioate) (0.50 and 1.00); Cartap® (S,S'-[2-(dimethylamino) trim ethylene] thiocarbamate hydrochloride) (0.25 and 0.50) ; CIBA 2307 (dimethylphosphate ester with ( E )-3-hydroxy-N-methoxy-N-methylcrotonamide) (0.25, 0.50, and 0.75); a mixture of phorate + Zinophos® ( O,O -diethyl O -pyrazinyl phosphorothioate) (1.00); carbofuran (0.25, 0.50, and 1.00); Mocap® ( O -ethyl S,S -dipropyl phosphorodithioate) (0.75 and 1.00); propoxur (1.00); Landrin® (4: 1 mixture of 3,4,5-and 2,3,5-trimethylphenyl methylcarbamate) (0.75 and 1.00); Bay 93820 (isopropyl salicylate O -ester with O -methyl phosphoroamidothioate) (1.00); Hercules 17413 ( O,O -dimethyl phosphorodithioate S -ester with 3-(mercaptomethyl)-I-methylhydantoin) (1.00); and Bay 91273 (isopropyl salicylate O -ester with O -ethyl phosphoroamidothioate) (1.00).
