Fecundity after childhood cancer: A nationwide, population-based study.

2010
1574 Background: Despite improved fertility-preserving treatment, reproductive rates in childhood cancer survivors are expected to be lower than in the general population. Methods: We investigated reproductive patterns in 4,713 childhood cancer survivors of the most common diagnoses and 23,630 age- and gender- matched controls using data from the Cancer and the Medical Birth Registry of Norway. All were born ≥ 1951 and diagnosed with cancer 1953-2004, at age 0-16 yrs (median 5). Follow-up was from the date of diagnosis for pts, assigned date for controls, until first pregnancy after cancer (regardless the outcome), emigration, death or Dec 31, 2008.Competing risk regression models were used to compute overall reproductive rates for both genders, and separately for each of the selected diagnoses. The hazard rates (SHRs) were adjusted for age at diagnosis and computed for pts diagnosed 1980+. Results: Overall, males were 72% less likely to initiate a pregnancy compared to their age-matched controls (SHR=0.2...
