Solute distributions at non-planar, solid-liquid growth fronts
1970
Abstract The shapes of steady-state growth fronts have been varied in Al-Cu and Al-Ag alloys by independent control of concentrations, freezing rates and temperature gradients. The information reported concerns (a) the scale and shape of the interfaces, and (b), the efficiency of lateral v longitudinal solute redistribution at cellular or dendritic interfaces. The observations are discussed with reference to the interfacial temperature and stability, and it is suggested that the interfaces adjust their shape in such a way as to eliminate any constitutional supercooling.
