Are proppants really necessary

1998
Gelling agents, proppant, and associated chemical additives make up a large part of fracturing costs. In the early days of hydraulic fracturing, treatments were performed with low-viscosity fluids and low sand concentrations. This paper presents field and production data from such treatments and compares them with conventional fracturing jobs.
