NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF STERN WAVES PAST PLANING FLAT PLATE AND SOME DISCUSSION ON WAVEMAKING PHENOMENA

1996
Numerical simulation was used to investigate the wavemaking phenomena of a planing flat plate. Through numerical computation, some wave patterns were compared with experiments, eg: the bow divergent wave, triangle wave, stern divergent wave and stern cross wave. The characteristic distance of wave was found to be more inconsistent as the incidence angle increased. The calculation was carried out for the incidence angle of 5o, 10o and 15o. It was clear that some numerical difficulties were due to the nonlinearity of stern waves behind the trailing edge for more than 15o. The second part of the paper shows the free surface computation when the multi-grid is used only on the free surface. With relatively less computer storage and CPU, the accuracy could be improved more than 20% for the free surface generation.
