2011
Introduction: This paper describes the microsite dedicated to Dr. Ramon Castroviejo whose aim is to collect, preserve, disseminate and make accessible his material and documentary legacy that was donated to the Complutense University of Madrid Material and methods: It has been carried out on the basis of documents, artifacts and bibliographic materials that are part of the library of the Instituto de Investigaciones Oftalmologicas Ramon Castroviejo. The microsite is independent, but maintains hyperlinks to multiple resources of the Library of the UCM, the Cisne catalog, Complumedia and Compludoc. It has been divided into five sections. The first one, devoted to his biography, is an HTML document with hyperlinks to internal information of the microsite itself, other documents from the BUC or external ones. The second chart includes graphic documentation that consists of photographs, slides and scientific films made by Dr. Castroviejo in 35 mm; a part has been digitized using the WMV format through the Complumedia resources. The third section is devoted to Dr. Castroviejo literature, gathering the one on the legacy, the one in the BUC catalog as well as the one located in external libraries; this material has been digitized and the microsite allows full-text access when it is availaible. With a similar methodology there has been created the fourth section, the documentation dedicated to Dr. Castroviejo and his works; in this case additionally to the reference and full-text access there has been included a hyperlink to Compludoc. The last section is dedicated to the virtual exhibition about Dr. Castroviejo, performed by BUC on its centenary. Results: 130 of 240 available documents have been described and digitized. 32 of 412 films have been included, the objective being to add the remaining according to the availability of funds. Around 15% of photographs and slides have been processed. Conclusion: This is an open digital multimedia project which will integrate different types of documents (books, articles, photographs, films, newspapers, archival material...) coming from the legacy of a Spanish scientist who contributed considerably to the advancements in ophthalmology in the XXth century. The importance of his legacy, that constitutes a source of information of ophthalmology in Spain, is emphasized.
