The last hundred years have resulted in more surgical innovation than in the preceding two millennia. Many surgeons probably believe that the scientific basis for contemporary surgical practice goes back to the pioneering physiologists and pathologists of the 18th and 19th centuries and while there are plenty of examples that support this notion, much of today's surgery is actually based on relatively recent scientific discovery.
