The invention discloses a feeder automation method for a power distribution network, and belongs to the technical field of smart power grids. According to the method, each substation monitors whether a communication link between itself and a master station is smooth or not in real time; when each communication link is smooth, the master station performs fault monitoring and handling on the whole power distribution network according to fault monitoring information transmitted by each substation by a centralized feeder automation method; when monitoring the communication link between itself and the master station is disconnected, a certain substation performs fault monitoring and handling on power distribution network areas governed by itself by a local feeder automation method, and the master station performs fault monitoring and handling on power distribution network areas governed by other substations by the centralized feeder automation method. The invention further discloses a feeder automation system for the power distribution network. Compared with the prior art, the feeder automation method and the feeder automation system have the advantages that negative influences of communication link faults on the feeder automation system can be effectively reduced, and safety and reliability of the power distribution network can be improved.
